DESPITE the ongoing atrocious conditions on Warrington Anglers' Association's river fisheries, a few hardy anglers have shown that reasonable catches are possible.

Our new stretch on the River Wye is producing a few reasonable catches despite the sustained high-water conditions.

Alan Bashford has lately managed to snatch a few sessions between floods. Using 1oz lead with ledgered meat or pellet last Wednesday, he had nine chub to 4lbs plus a brown trout of around 1lb.

The following day he fished from 11am and was on his way home by 2pm but had three good-sized chub on ledgered meat plus a smaller one.

A change of bait to halibut pellet a further two chub - one of which weighed in at 5lbs - and barbel of 4lbs and 7lbs.

Female member Chris Redwood fished her favourite stretch of the River Dane at Holmes Chapel on Friday the 13th but despite that she managed to tempt eight chub, all weighing 4lbs and above.

Because the river level was well up, she changed from her usual soft pellet and used drilled halibut pellets that she had soaked for two days in some meat-flavoured concoction. It certainly worked as every bite was positive with the tip slamming round every time.

On Saturday the river was unfishable but had dropped sufficiently the following day, alllowing Steve Brookes to take advantage of the brief respite with a catch of four chub to 4lbs plus a grayling of 2lbs.

Steve Edge and Kevin Barnett visited the River Severn at Alberbury on Sunday but were faced with a river two metres up and rising, with water in the surrounding fields in places.

However they decided not to throw in the towel and somebody up there must have felt sorry for them because the river started to drop rapidly.

Using meat on the hook, Kevin soon had a brace of barbel around 6lbs, while all Steve could do was lose fish after fish in the floating debris.

He eventually managed two barbel of 6lbs and 6lbs but the day belonged to Kevin as he stole the show with two further fish of 8lbs 12ozs 0drms and a personal best of 9lbs exactly.
