NEW assistant manager Andy Nelson felt Warrington Town showed some promising signs in a narrow 2-1 home defeat to Bury's youth team in their first pre-season friendly on Saturday.
Nelson has joined the Yellows this summer as assistant to Ian Street and took charge for Saturday's game at Cantilever Park with the manager away on holiday.
Town, who included new signings such as Neil Smith and Liam Coyne, fell behind at the start of the second half but Graeme Mitchell equalised before a late Bury winner.
Nelson said: "We played our first team in the first half and I think we held our own, although Bury deserved the victory in the end."
Nelson has previously managed Leigh RMI in the Conference and has helped to attract several former Leigh players to the club.
Eighteen-year-old central midfielder Mike Deakin, who is a British College Leagues international, and 19-year-old right wing back Dean Alexander now on board although Nelson had hoped more players would follow him to Cantilever Park.
"I'm a coach and I wanted to go back to building a side," said Nelson, who knew Street from the Town manager's regular trips to watch Leigh.
"When I came out of the game Ian asked me if I wanted to come here and take it a bit easier, and I thought why not?
"I just hope we can start well and then we can attract some of those who didn't come with me.
"I was hoping I could attract more but it comes down to finance."
