WARRINGTON-BORN footballer Tommy Smith looks set to be a Premier League player next season after leading Huddersfield Town to the top flight.
The 25-year-old full-back captained the Terriers to a penalty shoot-out victory in Monday’s Championship play-off final against Reading.
The result means Huddersfield will play in the Premier League for the first time and return to English football’s top division for the first time since 1974.
Things ended on a sour personal note for Smith as he was forced off injured in the 88th minute at Wembley Stadium, but he took a full part in the celebrations despite sporting crutches and a protective boot on his foot.
After being made captain at the John Smith’s Stadium by manager David Wagner, Smith finished the season having made 47 appearances, notching four goals and seven assists from right-back.
Smith had been in the youth systems at Tranmere Rovers and Manchester City before joining Huddersfield in 2012.
