Paul Cullen with Cheshire development officer Alan Kilshaw after Wolves won at Salford in a pre-season friendly
A WOLVES team not realising its considered potential led to Paul Cullen’s reign as head coach ending in 2008.
There was some hangover from the previous season, when the team failed to reach the play-offs, disgruntlement was growing on the terraces and home attendances were dropping below 9,000.
With the enhancement in quality of signings, including Vinnie Anderson, Adrian Morley (both 2007) joined by Louis Anderson, Chris Hicks, Matt King and Michael Monaghan for Super League XIII, expectancy was high.

Despite starting the season with six wins from eight games – including strong successes against Wigan Warriors and Catalans Dragons – scraping home at strugglers Hull KR and Castleford were a prelude to some poor performances.

Awful conditions against Harlequins at home
It seemed Cullen’s side were falling short in defence and, at times, attitude, and all came to a head on bank holiday Monday, May 26.
Warrington were defeating bottom team Castleford 28-14 in front of the Sky TV cameras, with 10 minutes remaining.

But somehow Wolves managed to concede four tries as Cas gained their first away win of the campaign, 36-28.

Cullen told the Guardian: “That’s me done.”
Former Leeds, Bradford and Great Britain hooker James Lowes, Cullen’s assistant since July 2007, was handed caretaker duties and enjoyed initial success in ‘putting smiles back on faces’ as Wolves went on a run of seven wins from eight games under his stewardship, prompting the club’s bosses to appoint Lowes permanently.

Chris Hicks lands the match-winning conversion and the players celebrate
After the highlight of a 22-12 home win against Leeds, the campaign faded badly with the 46-8 play-offs defeat at Catalans Dragons being a game too far for a busted squad.
Supporters made it to Perpignan for the play-offs at short notice but it proved to be Catalans Dragons' night
Had Wolves come out on top in the epic Challenge Cup fifth-round clash with bogey team St Helens at Knowsley Road in May, rather than losing 40-34, we will never know if a good run would have bought Cullen more time.
Kevin Penny's magical try in the epic Challenge Cup clash with St Helens
Former Manly winger Hicks was the quickest of the new Australians to settle, his 19 tries seeing him finish the year as top try scorer, while there looked to be room for improvement in the new half-back combination between Monaghan and Lee Briers.
