ORFORD were not able to back up the previous week’s Guardian Cup heroics against Rylands when they bowed out of the Warrington and District League Jubilee Cup on Saturday.

Man-of-the-match Stuart Smith put them in front against Cronton Villa at Birchfield Sports Club, but the Widnes outfit responded twice to progress to the second round.

An Eagle JFC side struggling with injuries marched on in the Drinkwater Cup courtesy of a 3-2 success at Grange Sports Reserves in terrible weather conditions.

Eagle took the lead through Matty Colley and after Grange equalised they lost two players with injury and veterans Chris Rodger and Alan Urey entered the fray.

After turning round 2-1 in front, Eagle then lost captain and scorer of the second goal Scott James to illness and again Grange levelled courtesy of David Fleming’s second strike.

But a wonder pass from James’ replacement Martin Deakin set up Brad Stokes for the winner.
