I’M sad to report the death of Dave Berry, who passed away in his sleep last month.
He had a long association with our sport at Cheshire Angling, and more recently when he ran Meadow View Fishery - which he dug out and built into a successful complex.
His cremation is today, Thursday, in Warrington.
Lee Latham and son Jay returned to the Bridgewater Canal for another drop-shotting session.
It was payback time for dad after a previous trouncing by his five-year-old, and he hit into a fish on a lure and light tackle that set off like a train.
A few anxious moments later, a healthy mirror carp of 11-11-0 lay on his mat.
We had a visit from poachers and vandals last week at our Wide Hole Fishery, where they destroyed bank-side trees to stoke up a fire and generally left the place in a disgusting state.
Theft of fishing rights is an offence, so any member who spots poachers can ring the police.
Thanks to the member, who also cleared up the misfits’ rubbish, for reporting this.
Last week’s Saturday Series match on the Mersey was cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions, but this week’s went ahead despite a big tide and high winds.
Weights were understandably down, but Ade Green stuck to maggot feeder tactics to chalk up his second win on the river with 2-1-0 of small roach.
In second place and, I have to say, rarely out of the money, was Jim Gannon who used the same method to catch roach weighing 1-14-0.
Our Sunday Series fixture was little better, victor Neil Buist needing only 1-4-0 of small roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot.
I shouldn’t need to tell you who was second, but for the record Jim Gannon was there again.
Thankfully the Bridgewater Canal fished much better for our disabled and over 60s match on Monday.
Lennie Dutton notched up a third win in as many weeks with 5-12-4 of roach taken on the pole, alternating between bread punch and pinkie on the hook.
George Barber was runner-up with 4-5-0.
Thanks again to those volunteers who turned up at Grey Mist Mere on Saturday to continue removing weed despite the bad weather.
More members are now fishing the water, so I would hazard a guess more fish are being caught.
