HOOK and Jab boxer Mike McKay, who has been selected to be part of the England squad, has accepted a last-minute call-up to compete in the Great Britain Championships.
The 28-year-old heavyweight will square up with Wales’ Kody Davies at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Thursday.
McKay, a personal trainer, is one of 12 England pugilists named by the British Amateur Boxing Association to compete against winners of this year's GB Elite Three Nations competition for the title of GB Boxing Champion 2015.
The 91kg fighter earned his place in the England squad through impressing in trials, receiving an invitation following his success in reaching the final of the England National Championships.
England selectionweekend consisted of spar and tech sessions, strength and conditioning, as well as runs and weight management.
Boxers assessed had to complete all aspects of boxing training at both a physical and physiological level.
“Mike excelled in all aspects,” said Hook and Jab coach Amanda Groarke.
“Mike has come so far within the past two years after having a shoulder operation.
“He first started boxing five years ago although had almost two years out from competing while having rehab to ensure his shoulder had completely healed.
“He’s also overcome the sudden death of his brother and best friend, boxing giving him the focus to deal with his grief.
“Myself, Derek Groarke and all the Hook and Jab team wish Mike the best of luck for Thursday’s contest.”
