LYMM Angling Club's Cliff Taylor enjoyed a couple of end-of-season sessions on the River Severn at Atcham.

Fish after fish was caught and Cliff described them as shoalies - that's barbel of around 5lbs. No fish were caught after 3pm.

On the still waters, carp action is again dominating reports.

One such report came from member Lee McLaughlin, who fished Belmont Pool on Saturday night in gale-force wind conditions.

Undaunted, Lee fished on to land nine carp ranging from 11lbs to 20lbs 4ozs.

The weather certainly tested his bivvy, which fortunately stood up to the conditions unlike the poor angler next to him who was last seen chasing his bivvy across a field.

Earlier in the week, bailiff Jimmy Ashall spent a session on the same water from 9am until 6pm and landed three fish to 11lbs 9ozs, all of which came in the last three hours.

The biggest carp reported this week came from Founders Pool and weighed in at 21-13-0.

Village Pool and Grimsditch Pool are fishing very well, with bream, roach, rudd and perch dominating catches.

Village Pool has produced quite a few carp and, although they remain on the small side, they do offer the opportunity to catch a bonus fish on lightish tackle, enabling their captors to demonstrate the sort of skills required to land such fish.

Shakerley Mere has produced a lot of surprises for daytime pleasure anglers, with bream of 4lbs to 5lbs not unusual, coming mainly to long pole or feeder tactics.

Roach are now plentiful, as are perch with one landed last year of 4lbs.

There is evidence that a colony of Daubentons bats inhabit the banks and surroundings of The Retreat.

As this species is associated with a specific disease, the site has been closed to members as a precautionary measure while advice is sought from the authorities.

As this is potentially a health issue, members are instructed to stay off the site altogether unless otherwise advised.

There are no work parties this weekend but two more are scheduled in April.

This means there remains an opportunity for members to earn their full 12 overstamp, allowing them to fish the waters selected for members who have done just that.

The next work party is scheduled for April 7, meeting at Whitley Pool store at 9am.
