MAGNIFICENT victories were achieved by Warrington teams in amateur rugby league's Halbro Lancashire Cup finals in Widnes on Sunday, keeping hopes alive of double success.

Rylands Sharks under 18s won 34-0 in their final with St Helens side Blackbrook, while Latchford Albion Unicorns under 16s defeated Blackbrook 16-14 with a golden-point penalty goal.

Both finals were played in front of a large crowd in atrocious weather conditions at Widnes Recreation Ground and it was the Warrington fans that went away happy.

Rylands, currently three points and one game behind Blackbrook in the North West Counties Under 18s Premier Division, were in mesmerising form as they grabbed their first piece of silverware of the season.

The opening half was tight but the astute kicking game of Great Britain half back Chris Forster, the son of former Wolves winger Mark, created tries for centres Stephen Fisher and Jonathan Smith to give Rylands an 8-0 half-time advantage.

Second row Sam Driscoll and Fisher went over in the second half and then Great Britain full back Ryan Fieldhouse, the son of ex-Wolves prop John, caught the restart on his own 10-metre line before bursting through the Blackbrook defence and outpacing the cover for a length of the field try.

The lead was extended even further in the closing minutes as Smith grabbed his second of the day and the hard-working Steven Moorcroft got his reward with the last try of the afternoon.

Earlier in the day, a dramatic penalty kick from Latchford Albion's Richard Taylor in golden point extra time finally separated two fine sides in the under 16s final.

The Unicorns, currently leading the way in the North West Counties Premier Division, recovered from an early 10-point deficit as two tries from Jack Cooper and one from Mike Lee took the contest into extra time.

In a wonderful team effort, Matthew Lomas was deservedly adjudged to be the player of the match.

* Rylands Sharks will hold a bucket collection for Great Britain players Chris Forster and Ryan Fieldhouse at Warrington Wolves' Challenge Cup fourth round tie with Hull KR on March 31.

The duo need to raise a total of £460 each to play in three international matches for BARLA Great Britain under 18s in Serbia between April 13 and 22.
