WARRINGTON Sports Personality of the Year John Nicholls warmed up for what could be the last event of his career by retaining the British Masters Indoor Championships shot put title last Sunday.

The 41-year-old from Stockton Heath plans to end a glorious career if he takes gold at the European Veteran Indoor Championships in the Finnish capital of Helsinki on March 22.

Nicholls was using the British Championships in Picketts Lock, London, as preparation for Helsinki and took the gold medal with a throw of 14.71m.

He finished a comfortable 63 centimetres ahead of his nearest competitor, Wales' Andy Turner, to retain the title he won in Cardiff last year.

Nicholls said: "I won with the 14.71m throw in the second round but as soon as I opened up with 14.65m it was game, set and match really. But I'm taking the win in my stride this year, when I was delighted last year, so it shows how far I've come in the last 12 months."
