GUARDIAN Cup holders Grappenhall Sports will bid to defend their trophy when they take on Warrington Town Reserves in this year's final on April 9.

Warrington Soccer League Division One side Grappenhall Sports, known as Stockton Lane when they won the cup last year, defeated Mid-Cheshire League First Division club Rylands 2-1 in Saturday's semi final at St Michaels DH thanks to strikes from Tom Buckley and Dan Sisson.

But Grappenhall will face a tough test against Warrington Town's second string, who reached the Easter Monday final after a 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory against Rainhill Town at Moorfield.

Keeper Aaron Tyrer was the hero for Town, saving two penalties in the shoot-out before stepping up to score the winner.

The match ended 2-2 after extra time, with Mid-Cheshire League Second Division side Town taking the lead in the second half when Owen Ellis headed home.

Rainhill forced extra time in the 89th minute but Town went back in front in the 104th minute as Lee Boardman's cross-shot eluded the Rainhill keeper.

Rainhill levelled again with four minutes to go but Town were victorious in the shoot-out.

Town Reserves: Tyrer, Parr, Hall, Brownbill, Pennington, Sinker (Brown), Warburton, Ellis (Salmon), Sweeney, Boardman, Potter. Sub not used: McCormack.
