HAZEL Musgrove scored her second Olympic goal for Team GB’s women’s water polo team as they fell to an 11-9 defeat to Russia in the first round of the 5th to 8th classification semi finals at the Water Polo Arena.
After crashing out of the main competition at the quarter final stage with a 9-7 loss to Spain on Sunday, GB were hoping to push their way up the final rankings with victory over Russia.
But instead the three-goal defeat means they will have to battle it out for last place with Italy in their final game on Thursday, 2.30pm start, when they will hope to gain their first win of London 2012 and avoid finsihing bottom of the pile at the team’s first Olympics.
GB had been leading 5-4 at half time, but Musgrove’s long distance goal in the third quarter was one of only four GB goals in the second half as the Russians finished strongly to crush the host’s hopes of victory.
