The right to read and write

Every child has the right to be able to read and write. It is one of the first things they start to learn when they attend primary school. A simple basic skill.

Just think of how often you read on a daily basis: Newspapers, signs, menus, TV guides, prices in stores, food label and the list goes on. It is an invaluable skill that allows us to make sense of the world around us.

So when I hear of an 8-year-old who is unable to read or write because his mother doesn't let him go to school, it angers me.

She claims to home school him but yet he can't read or write anything. Apparently there is nothing anyone can do.

Someone I know has reported this to the appropriate welfare agencies who have both said they can do nothing about it as she is allowed to home school.

The fact that her son cannot read or write doesn't seem to matter. No one can or wants to do anything about it. As far as I'm concerned, someone should be able to do something because it's nothing less than neglect.
