WARRINGTON Central station helped First TransPennine Express win an award for station excellence.
It picked up the rail business award for the range of improvements brought in to the station.
More than £400,000 from the National Station Improvement Programme as well as £300,000 from Warrington Borough Council saw the station get a new entrance and refurbished interior.
Category judge Peter Plisner said: “Competition was stiff but Warrington was chosen because it encompasses everything that the station excellence award stands for: better access, more facilities and increased revenues.
“First TransPennie Express has also gone the extra mile with this scheme.
“The station appears to have been modernised very sympathetically. On too many projects costs come first and Victorian splendour is lost, but not here.”
