THE spirits of young patients at Warrington Hospital were lifted when two Wolves players paid them a surprise visit.
Second rower Matty Blythe and winger Chris Riley came to the children’s ward as part of a player ambassador scheme.
The role rotates between members of the squad and sees players from the first team make regular trips to see the children.
Eighteen-year-old Danielle, who has spent six weeks in hospital, saw the pair earlier this month and has since watched a training session with them at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Her foster mum Marretta Connolly said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to Matty Blythe and Chris Riley for popping in to see Danielle.
“It was a lovely surprise visit and it certainly cheered both of us up.
“Watching the training really lifted our spirits and we enjoyed our morning at the stadium.”
Matty was thrilled to be able to put a smile on the children’s faces.
He said: “It is nice to be able to help children who are having a difficult time and to give something back to the community and parents who are caring for them.”
Talking about the importance of the ambassador scheme, player welfare manager Karl Fitzpatrick said: “The role is something we are very proud of at Warrington. The players really enjoy meeting the kids and I think the bravery of some children amaze the players.
“When we meet children like Danielle and her foster mum and see all the pain she has suffered but how she still manages to keep going and enjoy life it certainly inspires us all.
“I think they enjoy the players’ visits as much as the children.”
