A COUPLE were taken to hospital after they jumped into the Mersey to save their dog.

Firefighters carried out the rescue at 4.40am on Friday, close to Howley Weir on Knutsford Road.

Graham Davies, watch manager, said: "When we arrived we met the police and could see the couple in the water.

“They were submerged to their waist and clinging to a rope.

“We used a special harness to keep them secure in the water while a rescue sled was sent in from the opposite river bank.

“Two firefighters then rescued the couple one by one and took them to the water edge where they were checked over.”

It is thought the pair were trying to rescue their dog, who had fallen into the water during a walk.

Firefighters searched for the dog but described it as an ‘impossible task’ due to the height and flow of the water.

Mr Davies added: “We understand that it is difficult when a pet goes into the water but we would never advise people to attempt a rescue themselves as it is far too easy to get into difficulties.

“It is always a good idea to keep dogs on leads close to water.”
