THE rivalry on the pitch has never been stronger than in a two-week period in 2010.
Warrington Wolves, pushing for a place in the top two, unexpectedly lost by one point against bottom club Catalan Dragons at the Stade Aimé Giral in Perpignan on July 24.
That 29-28 result set the scene perfectly for the two sides’ first ever meeting in the Carnegie Challenge Cup a fortnight later.
The semi-final was played at Widnes’ Stobart Stadium and was packed with around 12,000 Warrington fans in a 12,265 crowd as the holders ran out convincing 54-12 victors en route to back-to-back wins in the competition at Wembley for the first time in the club’s history.
