THE town centre was packed with Bangra dancers, Polish and Russian performers and Bollywood music during its first Mela on Sunday.
The event, organised by WECA, the Warrington Ethnic Communities Association, is usually an Asian celebration but WECA decided to celebrate all the cultures of Warrington during the day at the Parr Hall and in Queen’s Gardens.
Mayor of Warrington Clr Mike Biggin opened the event and was welcomed by a procession of drums played by people in Asian ceremonial dress. And visitors were also treated to a range of stalls including the inflatable Army assault course, bouncy castle, fairground rides, henna stalls and a wealth of food stalls from all cultures. Halina Kelly, an advocate from the Polish community, baked traditional Polish delicacies.
The event was run with the help of Golden Gates Housing Trust, the council, Cheshire Fire Service and Stronger Together.
Peter Mercer, chief executive from GGHT, said: “GGHT is proud to have been involved in Warrington’s first Mela and will continue to support this great event as the years progress, building on our past achievements.”
PS Tatla, a member of WECA, said the event was a great success and was delighted with the weather, the company and also all of the spectators that came to give their support.
He added: “This Mela will be the first of many – we are already looking forward to the next one.”
