A POLICE officer is set to return to his roots this month ahead of an inspiring charity journey.

PC Dave Flanagan, based at Warrington Police Station on Arpley Street, starts a run from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Widnes on May 27.

The 180-mile run will be completed in nine days by the 41-year-old and takes him from his former Army base of Newcastle down to his home in Widnes where he will stage a charity night on June 4.

He served with the Royal Artillery from 1991 to 2001, and saw action in Northern Ireland and Bosnia. For the past 10 years he has been working as a police officer in Warrington.

And on the 10th anniversary, raising money for Help for Heroes seemed natural for PC Flanagan.

He added: “Not only do I see the event as a personal test, I am also determined to raise funds and awareness for Help for Heroes, a charity that cares for our service personnel who are injured while serving their country.”

PC Flanagan has been running up to 70 miles a week to prepare for the run – but will need to double that to complete the challenge.

The charity night, which will be held at The Stobart Stadium in Widnes, will include a charity auction and PC Flanagan is still looking for items to include.
