WORKERS from Unilever plants are set to take part in a national demonstration today, Wednesday against plans to scrap pensions.
Unilever has decided to axe its final salary pension scheme affecting 5000 employees including those from the Warrington branch on Liverpool Road.
It will be replaced by the CARE scheme from 2012, which union Unite says is an inferior alternative.
Unilever is responsible for brands including Comfort, Surf, Domestos, Marmite, Pot Noodle and Dove The protests took place outside Unilever’s AGM metting in London.
Jennie Formby, Unite national officer, said: “This attack is just greed by Unilever. Shutting down a decent pension scheme will wash the retirement plans of 5,000 workers down the drain. This is absolutely and fundamentally wrong – and they deserve better.”
