RSPCA Warrington is urging people to give a stray or abandoned animal a home during the charity’s annual fundraising week.

The Slutchers Lane rehoming centre needs people to adopt a host of animals it currently looks after.

Among them are 19 cats, 17 dogs, eight rabbits, a parrot and a ferret.

Rowdy, an eight-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, was abandoned outside the centre in January with just a note and a bowl of food.

Chris Walkden, manager of the centre, said: “We found Rowdy when we came in one morning. He was tied to the post and looked really miserable.

“He’s a lovely dog and very placid but he’s starting to get distressed being in kennels. He would be suited to an adult household, such as a mature couple who like going for walks.”

Mikey, a three-year-old cat, lost an eye after he was brought to the home as a stray on April 19.

Neil Williams, an animal care assistant, said: “We believe Mikey lost his his eye because of an abscess. He’s doing really well since his operation. He’s a favourite of mine, he’s really laid back and likes being made a fuss of and deserves a good home.”

Brian, an albino ferret, also came to the home as a stray and Neil added: “Ferrets make good pets if you handle them regularly. They are very affectionate and playful but people need to have a lot of patience with them.”

Larry the Lorikeet, a type of parrot, has distinctive deep blue and red plumage and is a stray too.

RSPCA inspector Anthony Joynes said: “It’s most likely Larry escaped through an open window, understandably this becomes more common when it’s sunny outside.

“They are very entertaining pets if they have a big enough cage and toys to keep them busy.”

Throughout RSPCA week volunteers have been at the Tesco Extra store on Winwick Road, to collect money for the centre.

Anthony added: “The Warrington branch provides an excellent service to the community and receives no Government funding so it deserves all the help it can get.”
