COUNCILLORS have welcomed plans to make a stretch of busy road in Orford safer for pedestrians and school children.

Orford councillor Kate Hannon and Yvonne Fovargue, councillor for Fairfield and Howley, have visited O'Leary Street to check out the proposed scheme for themselves.

It has been based on comments received from previous consultation exercises undertaken with the community and Beamont junior and infant schools.

It will provide a zebra crossing, anti-skid surface, and the road will be subject to a 20mph speed limit.

Councillor Kate Hannon said: "This scheme is designed to meet the expectations of the majority of residents but it is only right that before work starts that local people have the opportunity to comment on the scheme.

"At the heart of the proposal is the need to make O'Leary Street safe for all users and this must be the major consideration.

"I hope that residents get on board and take part in the consultation."

Clr Yvonne Fovargue added: "O'Leary Street is a busy stretch of road and the road-calming measures proposed will make the road safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.

"In particular, I welcome the zebra crossing which will provide a safe way for pupils and parents to cross the busy road on school days."

The proposed scheme will again be subject to consultation with affected residents.
