CHESHIRE Police have formally agreed to share intelligence with Greater Manchester Police in an effort to cut cross border crime and save money.

The force will have direct access to the GMP intelligence database after Cheshire Police Authority members agreed to the proposal.

But a small number of Cheshire staff who will now work with GMP, will continue to have their wages paid by Cheshire Police, as part of Cheshire's contribution to the agreement.

The two forces will also looking at working together more on motorway policing.

"These are small steps, but pretty important ones," said Peter Nurse, chairman of the police authority, at a special meeting at Police HQ in Winsford on Tuesday.

The force is trying to work closer with its neighbours because it needs to find ways to tackle level 2 crime' - offences committed by criminals travelling into the area.

Police forces are finding it hard to get the money to do this because Government targets and expectations are focused on level 1 crimes, which are high volume crimes like criminal damage.
