IT seems size does matter - when it comes to posting a letter anyway.

Royal Mail brought in sweeping changes to the postal system last week meaning the amount customers pay to post their letters and parcels will be based on size as well as weight.

And although regulators Postwatch had predicted problems when the price system was first launched on August 21 it seems Warrington customers have adapted well to the biggest change to the post service for more than 100 years.

In simple terms, pricing in proportion means the bigger the letter or parcel, the more it costs to send.

Items will be split into three categories: letters, large letters and packets (anything else).

But Royal Mail says that more than 80 per cent of mail will remain the same or come down in price.

The Warrington Guardian spoke to a number of post offices across the borough and most reported little problems since the change to the system had come into force.

A spokesman for Stockton Heath post office said that they had received a few inquiries from customers who were unsure as to the changes.

And a spokesman for Grappenhall Post office added: "It has been very smooth, it has only really affected older people who were a little unclear."

To test how the postal service in Warrington is coping with the new system, we sent four first class and four second class letters to four addresses in Orford, Birchwood, Lymm and Great Sankey.

All letters arrived at their destination within a day.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "All the indications are that it has been business as usual in post offices in Warrington this week. Customers are managing the changes extremely well along with post office counter clerks and Royal Mail's operational people."
