Welcome to a brand new column, all about real food and the steps you can take to improve your family's health.

These days food and diet are never far from the headlines, and it’s easy to get lost in the maze of conflicting advice and advertising that bombards us every day.

I’ll be tackling some of the big questions, such as: why are we all getting fatter despite eating a lower-fat diet than ever before?

Why are so many of us afflicted with low-level health problems such as IBS, ulcers, allergies, asthma and eczema, despite eating up all our 'healthy' grains and cereals? Are our children becoming diabetic simply because they eat too much, or is there more to it?

And why is infertility on the increase?

I will also show you how some aspects of our modern diet could be making you sick, whilst some forgotten foods can boost your health and immunity in unexpected ways.

If you're shopping to a budget then the good news is that my first few columns will tackle the thorny issue of how you can provide delicious, nourishing foods without breaking the bank.

You might be surprised to learn that many of the nutrition essentials I'll be recommending will already be lurking in the backs of cupboards or fridges- and that just including these in your meals can deliver all sorts of benefits from improving your memory to giving you lovely skin.

I also recognise that many people don’t have the luxury of a huge amount of time when it comes to preparing food. I won't pretend that it's easy or realistic to be a Jamie Oliver 24 hours a day, but with a bit of forward-planning and that wonderful modern invention, the freezer, I will show you how you can take some steps in the right direction.

I’ll also be talking about food and health-related stories in the news, from reality TV diet challenges to the latest superfood claims. Is calorie-counting really the best way to lose weight? Is red meat bad for you? Does broccoli protect you from cancer?

If there’s a topic you’d like to draw my attention to, or a health issue you’d like me to discuss in future columns, I’d love your feedback.

Next week: Save time, money and energy as I reveal my secret kitchen weapon.
