VILLAGERS in Lymm took a step back in time on Sunday for the annual Rushbearing Festival.

Members of all parts of the community designed and carried their own rushes for the tradi- tional August march.

The festival, which dates back to Medieval times, drew Brownies, members of the Women's Institute and parish councillors as well as town crier Peter Powell.

The procession left Lymm Village Hall, making its way to St Mary's Church for a small service.

On its return, the group enjoyed morris dancing before the judging of the rush garlands.

The tradition grew out of the need to replace the reeds used as a carpet on the earthen floor of buildings including the village church.

The community joined together to gather the rushes and remove the old ones - combining the work with dancing and music.
