LESS than 60 per cent of new homes built in Warrington are on previously developed land.

Figures released by the Campaign for Rural England (CPRE) show that the borough is ranked 214th out of 354 local authorities for the proportion of new homes built on recycled (or brownfield) land between 2001-2004.

The current figure of 57 per cent is an eight per cent rise from 1997-2000.

Brownfield land is an area that has already been developed as opposed to greenfield land, which has never been used for development. The figures also show that the borough meets Government planning guidelines for most new homes to be built at medium densities of greater than 30 homes per hectare.

A spokesman for CPRE said the organisation is campaigning to prevent proposed changes in Government planning guidance, which could weaken the approach in recent years to use Brownfield land first.
