AFTER catching a gang of notorious criminals responsible for raids and muggings, the police robbery unit is closing.

Warrington Police is now handing back these crimes to other teams in the force following the success officers in the robbery unit achieved.

Led by Detective Sergeant Dave Walsh, the robbery unit saw six men from Liverpool charged over 11 armed and street robberies in the town.

The gang are believed to have been involved with raids across Cheshire and Merseyside totalling £50,000.

DS Walsh said: "We were established in May to deal with the rise in robberies and these incidents have now reduced so that we will no longer concentrate on these crimes.

Based at Widnes Police Station, the squad worked in both Halton and Warrington, where there were more 35 robberies from April to June.

DS Walsh added: "Robbery of any kind can have a traumatic effect on the victims. We are committed to investigating these crimes thoroughly and we will do everything we can to bring perpetrators to justice."
