WARRINGTON Borough Council is leading the way in allowing its employees to extend their working life beyond the retirement age of 65.

The new Employment Equality (Age) regulations come into force in October, making it illegal to discriminate on the grounds of age or make anyone compulsorily retire below the age of 65, without justification.

The council, however, will be removing the compulsory retirement age and allowing its 8,000 employees more choice in when they retire.

Lisa Fenton, assistant head of human resources, said: "This is beneficial to employer and employee alike, as it offers individuals flexibility, embraces the spirit of the new age regulations and contributes to the council's commitment to equality."
