SCHOOL chiefs have hit back at an MEP who claimed they were fingerprinting children.

John Whittaker, who represents the UK Independence Party, said on Tuesday that youngsters at a number of schools, including Great Sankey High School in Warrington, were being fingerprinted. He also questioned if the schools had parental consent.

But Bob Williams, head of communications at Warrington Borough Council, told the Warrington Guardian that the school had finger recognition - not fingerprinting.

He added: "This is done with full parental consent and is used in the library to check books out. We have never had a complaint and there is no fingerprinting."
