A KEY road out of south Warrington is to benefit from a £7m investment package - though it may cause months of delays.

The A556 Chester Road will be improved from September to March next year and temporary lights will need to be installed.

The Government has said the work is needed to reduce congestion, improve safety and make journey times more reliable.

The road is the primary route between the M6 and M56 and is used by more than 50,000 vehicles a day.

Work will include: l installation of intelligent' traffic signals at the M6 Junction 19 roundabout, as well as resurfacing works at the roundabout l provision of CCTV cameras along the A556 to aid traffic management l intelligent' traffic signals at Bucklow Hill, along with resurfacing works l installation of intelligent' traffic signals at Bowdon island roundabout where the A556 joins the M56 l improvements at the Mere junction with the A550 including yellow box markings Paul Elliott, highways agency project manager, said: "This will help to alleviate congestion in the short term while a long term solution is developed."
