A WARRINGTON Army sergeant has pledged to raise pounds for a local school by losing some of his own.

Sgt Mike Rutherford from the Warrington Army Careers office on Winmarleigh Street is going on a sponsored diet on behalf of Green Lane Special School.

The school hopes to take its pupils on a three-day residential course to an activity centre in Cumbria but at the moment is struggling to meet costs.

Mike decided to help the school after hearing about its problem through friends at Bridge Foot Amateur Boxing Club where he helps out.

Supported by his local WeightWatchers group, Mike's goal is to lose three stone in four months, and he attended his first weigh-in on Thursday, tipping the scales 19 stones.

He said: "I am so pleased to be able to help out at Green Lane Special School. It is important that we always think about our local community and it is great to see so many people supporting me."

If you can, help contact Mike on 631574.
