CONGESTION charging in Warrington town centre moved a tiny step closer last week.
A leaked letter from the transport secretary reveals that plans for satellite-based road charging may be introduced as pilot schemes as early as next year.
The Government is switching funding towards schemes that will use road pricing, including congestion charging schemes.
Such a policy would be politically unpopular if it were introduced here - but Warrington's transport bosses know they may have to bite the bullet and introduce congestion charging to stop their funds drying up.
The council has already planned ahead by setting aside £45,000 in this year's budget to study congestion charging for people who make through trips across the town centre.
