A SMALL club in south Warrington they may be, but the Appleton Tigers women’s cricket team have been knocking their opposition for six.
The Tigers were named team of the year at the Warrington Sports Personality Awards on Friday.
And it will be another cup in already crowded trophy cabinet.
Cheshire league champions, they also took home the Cheshire Knockout Cup and the Cheshire T20 cup with last over finishes.
And coach Chris Moore said it is the never-say-die attitude which epitomises the team.
He said: “To win all three was truly phenomenal and it was really due to the girls’ hard work and willingness to never give up.”
The team is flourishing just 10 years after the women’s arm of Appleton Cricket Club was set up.
And Chris said their success and the rising profile of the women’s sport in general is contributing to the rising popularity.
He said: “England doing well and their television coverage has really helped.
“Everywhere we go we have seen girls playing cricket while they watch their dads and now they have somewhere to play.”
And the success has not been isolated in just winning trophies.
Around half of the 27 players represent Cheshire – a remarkable achievement.
“To think a little clubs in the south of Warrington could provide so many players to Cheshire youth squads is fantastic,” Chris added.
