WARRINGTON-born Pete Postlethwaite did not enrol in acting classes until he was 24.

He was a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company and other acting troupes by the time he became known in the USA through his film and television roles.

In 1994 he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for In the Name of Father. In 1995 he was nominated for a Bafta for best actor in Martin Chuzzlewit.

His success continued in 2000 and 2001 when he was again a Bafta nominee for his role in Lost for Words and The Sins.

Pete is known by cinema goers for his parts in The Last of the Mohicans (1992), The Usual Suspects (1995), Dragonheart (1996), and Jurassic Park: The Lost World (1997).

The accomplished actor has also appeared in many TV shows including Coronation Street, Casualty and TFI Friday where he joined forces with fellow Warrington celebrity, Chris Evans.

Even though Pete now resides in Shropshire with his wife and two children, he says it's great to come back to Warrington.

"Although Shropshire is now my home, Warrington feels like my roots," he told warringtonguardian.co.uk in an exclusive interview.

Pete's brother, sister, their children and grandchildren all still live here, so he is always coming back to visit. Pete still holds fond memories of Walking Days, Victoria Park and the smell of Crosfields and Rylands, and he looks back on his years at Warrington as "happy days."

In 2004 Pete was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours list.
