Warrington's leading scorer in the Super League era, Toa made a successful return to the primrose and blue in 2005 after three years away. He quelled doubts about his fitness record by making 26 Super League appearances in the season, adapting to the left centre instead of his natural right sided position in order to accommodate Martin Gleeson. A well-balanced runner who can swerve, step and offload at speed, Toa's game matured during his time away from the club and he returned a more disciplined and solid defender. Born in Wellington, New Zealand, but in every sense an adopted Warringtonian, Toa had been attached to the Auckland Warriors scholarship programme before joining Perth Western Reds in 1995. Was signed for Warrington by John Dorahy as a 19-year-old in time for his first summer season in 1996, and finished joint top of the regular season Super League try charts in 1999 with 25, still a Super League record for the Wolves.

English-qualified through his mother, Toa turned down the chance to make himself eligible for Great Britain and represented NZ Maori in the 2000 World Cup. Signed for Hull at the end of 2001 and spent two seasons on Humberside and one at Bradford Bulls before 'coming home' on a one-year deal, which was extended at the end of the season to keep him at the Halliwell Jones for 2006.
