IRRITATING. That's probably the best word to describe this odd and, to be perfectly honest, tiresome film starring Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot).
The movie centres upon the reclusive pig farming Munn family. Dermot Mulroney plays dad to aforementioned Jamie Bell and his little brother ably played by relative unknown Devon Alan.
As they amble through life following the death of their mother, the boys' lives are disrupted with the arrival of their menacing uncle Deel, aka Josh Lucas. Things are turned upside down when evil uncle Deel's real intentions become clear and the boys end up on the run with a cursed family heirloom.
Undertow is beautifully shot but the constant freeze frames did start to annoy me, once I'd worked out that my DVD player wasn't on the blink. Captivating would be the wrong word to use here but there is something about Undertow that makes you keep watching, mainly to see what will become of the boys and how they will survive living rough.
But take my advice and resist - the final scenes are disappointing to say the least and Undertow was, for me, another one of those 'life's too short' epics that makes you want to throw said film in the bin and regret those wasted two hours.
