Widnes 58

Oldham 5

WIDNES completed a demolition job over Oldham in the first round of rugby union's Lancashire Trophy.

It was a tremendous performance from the Heath Road side, going some way towards exorcising the demons of last year when the team was relegated with only one win all season.

The Widnes line-up had a much more balanced look about it and the second row pairing of Dave Howard and Nick Fellows controlled possession - and the game - for the 80 minutes.

Young centre Andy Riley caught the headlines with two tries and a bagful of goals in difficult windy conditions.

Captain Paul Borg scored twice, as did veteran winger Tommy Ledson, and there were further tries for scrum half Andy O'Neill and Mark Whitfield.

The win can only give Widnes plenty of confidence as they get ready to face Aspull at home in their first league game on Saturday.
