BOYS came out on top with huge improvements in their GCSE grades at St Chad's Catholic High School.

The school saw the number of boys who gained five or more A* to C grades jump by eight per cent to bring the overall level of passes at A* to C up to 50 per cent.

Also celebrating their results were Hayley Meagher and Alex Parkinson who not only gained two A*, eight A and one B grade and nine A and two B grades respectively, but they also passed the Asset Languages exam in Mandarin Chinese. The remarkable achievement by the two is even more spectacular as they are just two of a small number of English students to have passed the exam.

Arthur Graley, headteacher at St Chad's, said: "I congratulate all of our Year 11 pupils on their exceptional examination results. I am particularly pleased that our strategies for improving boys attainment has been successful."
