A YOUNG footballer turned into a hero on a college trip to Barbados when he saved a young girl from drowning.
Simon Smith was on a sports trip to the Caribbean island in July with other students from Riverside College Halton when he sprang into action to save the girl in the hotel pool.
The 17-year-old had noticed that the girl, who was on holiday with her parents from America, was missing after sitting at the pool's edge.
He quickly realised that the girl had slipped into the pool and was at
the bottom, motionless.
Without hesitation he jumped into the pool and pulled the girl to safety.
Simon, who comes from Rushmore Drive, will be travelling to Plymouth soon to start on the first phase of his naval training aboard HMS Raleigh.
Simon's PE teacher Chris Ratcliffe said: "Fortunately because of Simon's quick thinking no permanent damage was done and the young girl and her family were just shaken up."
The students were on a joint football and netball trip to the island when the incident happened.
