AT Sandbach School, James Baker was the toast of the teachers after being placed in the top five out of 5043 candidates nationally in Design and Technology.

James gained 7A*s and 4As, while 15 pupils gained more than 70 points, including Matthew Kerr with 7A*s and 4As and James Jackson with 6A*s and 5As.

The school's new Arts College status was backed up by top results in art, drama and music.

Headteacher Peter Wiles said: "These results do not come without the active support of the year 11 parents who worked closely with very committed staff to ensure the success of the year group."

Neighbouring Sandbach High School also excelled, with 80 per cent of the year group achieving five or more A* to C grades.

Headteacher John Leigh said the girls deserved real credit for an outstanding set of results, adding: "I have every confidence that this group of young adults at least have a very bright future and will be much sought after by employers."
