HALTON Hospital chiefs are backing a national campaign by the police to reduce violent attacks on staff.

Figures show that one in every 22 NHS employees were physically assaulted by a patient or patients' relative in the past year.

The NHS security management service and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) have vowed to investigate every reported incident and campaign for tougher sentences.

Chris Todd, security manager for North Cheshire Hospitals Trust, said Halton Hospital would have a zero tolerance policy to abuse of staff.

"Any staff member who is attacked will receive a personal visit from me to gather evidence and provide support," he said.

Workers will be taught how to diffuse potentially violent situations.
