A CREATIVE facelift is being arranged for Macon Way in Crewe with proposals including a street mural stretching along the road.

Waldron ward councillors Ron Salmon and Dennis Straine-Francis are now urging residents to have their say on the proposals.

A public meeting was held last week about major plans to enhance the appearance of Macon Way, which is seen as an important gateway into the town.

If the proposal gets the green light, the scheme will be overseen by Urban Canvas - a fashionable Liverpool-based visual arts company - and involve the local community in the design and delivery of professional murals.

The company, which has completed many pieces of work to enhance the streets in major cities, is highly regarded for the quality of its workmanship.

Commenting on the proposals, Cllr Salmon said he wanted to hear the views of the local community, before giving his support to the plans.

He said: "On the face of it, it sounds like an interesting and exciting project and if we use a professionally designed mural, the local community will be involved in a project to enhance a key gateway to the town.

"There is work that needs to be done to tidy up the area and if that can be included, then it might be a suitable option.

"If we can improve the appearance of the neighbourhood, then that can only be good news for the community. This is one of my top priorities for the Waldron ward.

"I'd really like to hear the views of the local community - I've already spoken to some residents and they have some legitimate concerns, such as the potential for vandalism to the mural.

"That's why I want to reassure people that I won't be supporting the idea if the borough council give it the go-ahead without listening to the views of local people.

"At the end of the day, I am here to represent the community and I want to ensure that everyone has a chance to express their view on this proposal."
