DRIVERS on north west roads narrowly missed hitting road workers 116 times in the first half of 2006.

The alarming figures have been made public as a campaign to highlight the dangers road workers face every day while working on motorways and trunk roads is launched by the Highways Agency.

Last year five road workers were killed and 12 seriously injured while working on the roads including two who died on the M6 south of the Lymm interchange.

The Highways Agency advises all motorists to drive with care and slow down when approaching road works and keep within the temporary speed limits.

Roy Wood, Highways Agency's area manager for Cheshire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Lancashire said: "Our contractors are the unsung heroes of the road - often doing a difficult job in difficult circumstances to make sure our roads are safe and traffic keeps moving and everyone should respect their safety."
