A GIANT DIY store and garden centre, creating new jobs and giving a derelict Old Town site a facelift, is set to open in Runcorn.

Amended plans for the development of Bridge Retail Park, beside Daresbury Expressway, in Okell Street, were approved by councillors on Monday.

The name of the retailer has not yet been disclosed but World sources believe it could be named as Homebase.

The company is not expected to be announced until contracts have been signed.

Members of the development control committee restricted the opening and delivery hours to 8pm, because, they said, the store is in a residential area.

Developer St Modwen Properties PLC wanted the business to be allowed to trade until 10pm and deliveries up to 9pm.

The 41,000 sq ft non retail unit will include a 10,000 sq ft garden centre and 11,000 sq ft mezzanine level.

A second single storey non-food retail unit of 9,203 sq ft is also included.

The land used to be occupied by the former Runcorn Development Corporation and Halton College.
