CONTENTIOUS plans to build a huge 600,000-tonne incinerator at Ince Marshes do not have sufficient detail, say Halton councillors.

Members of the development control committee objected to the proposal, by Peel Environmental Ince Limited, on Monday evening, because they claim they had not been given enough information.

A proposal to build an eco park at Ince Marshes, near Helsby, is being considered by Cheshire County Council.

Developers Peel hope its plans to revolutionise rubbish handling will be approved.

The Government will have the final say for the most controversial element of the package - a 95 mega watt incinerator.

Runcorn MP Mike Hall has already expressed his concern. In a letter to Cheshire County Council and the Department of Trade and Industry, he said: "I am concerned that this proposal includes the burning of treated waste to produce energy. There is a threat to public health from emissions from the incineration process."

Myles Kitcher, development manager of Peel Environmental, said: "We would not be able to get a planning consent if there was any danger to the community. The proposed plant will comply with all current UK and European standards."

The incinerator would burn rubbish from Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

An integrated waste management facility is pencilled in to treat household and commercial waste from across the north of the county.
