NANTWICH home owners are being warned to be on their guard against cold-calling companies offering 'no obligation' damp surveys.

Cheshire Trading Standards have received several complaints about so-called company representatives cold-calling to offer a free survey of a property.

Having made an appointment, the 'surveyor' examines the building and identifies damp areas needing immediate treatment.

The home owner is then asked to hand over a substantial deposit, only to discover later no work was required in the first place.

Cheshire Police have informed Home Watch representatives in the area about the threat.

Trading Standards officers say they have problems pursuing the companies because they often disappear soon after setting up, sometimes establishing the same activity elsewhere under a different name.

They also use mailing addresses, sometimes in London, to give the impression they are reputable.

Cty Cllr Nora Dolphin said: "I would urge anyone who receives a 'cold call' of this nature to follow Trading Standards advice and simply say 'no'.

"If anyone has accepted the services of such a company, they should contact Trading Standards immediately.

"It is usually possible to cancel any contracts which they sign, provided we are informed in time."
