A POLICE sting foiled a mass gathering of 'cruisers' at a popular haunt after souped-up cars raced at 100 piles per hour down the Expressway.
Two 18-year-olds - one from Runcorn, the other from Widnes - were among six people arrested for dangerous driving during the operation at Astmoor industrial estate last Monday night.
"This operation highlights the size and extent of cruises in the Halton area," said road policing sergeant Yvonne Williams after more than 1,000 people in 380 vehicles gathered to show off their cars.
"Officers found vehicles that were unroadworthy being driven among crowds of spectators putting lives at risk.
"This will not be tolerated. The disregard for the law is unacceptable and entirely irresponsible."
More than 50 police officers were deployed, including police dog handlers, air support teams and detectives, and an enforcement team from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).
Of the 133 people stop-checked, nine drivers were reported for driving offences, two vehicles seized, and 10 fixed penalty tickets issued as well as the six arrests.
VOSA officials issued 23 prohibition notices to owners of cars they suspected of being unsafe to drive.
Although the successful operation has ended Sgt Williams said the problem would 'remain a priority' for local police.
A 17-year-old male from Leigh is to appear before magistrates charged with driving without due care and attention.
Both Halton 18-year-olds have been released on police bail pending enquiries.
Legally held meetings are held on private land every week in north Cheshire with car owners proudly showing off their modified, high-performance cars to fellow enthusiasts under floodlights and with on-site marshalling and catering.
