THE Third Round of the Carlsberg UK Crewe Open League Summer Team Knockout competition provided a real shock.
Premiership side Flying Lady A were defeated by Second Division outsiders Nags Head B in a closely fought contest which was decided on the final dominoes game.
Flying Lady A held a 4-3 advantage at darts with the help of a 19 dart game by Tony Pogonowski but with the Nags recording four victories out of the six dominoes singles the Nags established a 7-6 aggregate lead.
Needing to win only one of the two remaining dominoes pairs games, the Nags duo of Les Tomkinson and Dave Clarke secured the victory to give them a surprise 8-7 passage into the quarter finals.
To make it an even more disastrous night for the Flying Lady, the B team suffered a 7-0 darts whitewash as hosts Rockwood ran out comfortable winners when Damien Weaver and Brian Gaffney won two singles dominoes games to give Rockwood a 9-4 aggregate win.
It wasn't a good night for the Liberal Club either as both teams lost to Premiership opposition with the Pioneers inflicting a 7-0 darts whitewash on Liberal C.
Tony Richardson was the top marksman with an 18 darter and together with victories in four dominoes games the Pies were easy 11-2 aggregate winners over their Division Five opponents.
Liberal A put up more of a fight against Vine A after going 4-0 down when the Vine took the first three darts and the first dominoes games.
The Liberal staged a recovery with two dominoes wins from Bill Armstrong and Mal Oliver and two darts wins by Paul Wright and captain Bill Armstrong fresh from his dominoes win.
Vine A responded strongly with Terry Walker winning in 23 darts and the duo of Steve Moss and Neil Tudor taking the darts pairs.
Dominoes wins by Mick Hassall and Pete Capper made for an 8-4 win but as the remaining games were played out and resulted in victories for the Liberal, the match finished with a more respectable scoreline of 8-7.
Another premiership team to record a 7-0 darts white-wash was Kings Arms A on their visit to the LMR.
Combined with victories for Adrian Russell and Jim Hamilton in two of the four dominoes games played, the Kings were easy 9-2 aggregate winners.
The other successful Premier side were Hawk who dominated visitors Crown at darts 6-1 thanks to the top marksmen Dave Hughes (14 darts) and Rob Galloway (18 darts).
Winning the dominoes 4-1 gave them a 10-2 aggregate victory, the Crown's only winners being Chris Watwood at darts and Ian Turner at dominoes.
The remaining Division Five team Grand Junction put up a strong fight at darts only allowing visitors Aslef Leisure a 4-3 advantage.
But they were completely dominated at dominoes 5-1 which gave Aslef a comfortable 9-4 aggregate passage into the next round.
The draw for the quarter-finals to be played on Monday, July 31 is as follows:
Rockwood v Nags Head B, Kings Arms A v Aslef Leisure, Pioneers v Amalgamated B or Bridge A, Hawk v Vine A.
