Your correspondent P Symes ('True cost of Walking Day', Points of View, June 29) is wrong in his assertion that Warrington Borough Council's staff were entitled to a paid day off for Walking Day.
This was a tradition in the old Warrington Council before unitary status was granted in 1998. Former employees of Cheshire County Council, who were transferred to the new Warrington Borough Council, had a similar entitlement for 'Chester Race Day'.
These older agreements have gradually been replaced over the years and new staff joining the authority since 1998 were not entitled to the day. In April of this year the provision was removed from remaining contracts.
